Substitute Craig Disley was Bristol Rovers’ spot-kick hero as the Coca-Cola League One outfit knocked out Barclays Premier League strugglers Fulham from the FA Cup after a penalty shoot-out. After 120 minutes of play failed to produce a goal, the third-round tie was decided by the lottery of a shoot-out, with Disley taking advantage of its only miss, by Jimmy Bullard, whose shot was saved by the excellent Steve Phillips

Chelsea defeated The Cottagers 2-1
New Fulham boss Roy Hodgson endured a losing start to his Cottagers reign as Chelsea overcame a lifeless first half to overpower their west-London rivals. Danny Murphy blasted Fulham ahead with a 10th-minute penalty, a lead which deservedly remained intact until the interval. But Chelsea clicked into gear after half-time with two goals in eight minutes keeping them snapping at the heels of the Premier League’s top two.

A poor game at Craven Cottage against Wigan
A poor game at Craven Cottage finished 1-1 between Fulham and Wigan, with a point doing neither side much good in their battle to avoid the drop. The Cottagers 0 Newcastle 1
Newcastle United scored a 1-0 win over Fulham in the Premiership at Craven Cottage on Saturday evening. Both teams were largely involved in a midfield battle and there were very few scoring chances in the first half. But the second period was lot livelier with the home side looking dominant. However, the Toon won a penalty in the second half injury time when Alan Smith was adjudged to have been brought down by Elliot Omozusi. Joey Barton kept his cool as he promptly dispatched the ball into the back of the net to bring full points to Sam Allardyce’s side.

Fulham 0-2 Liverpool
An explosive substitute appearance from Fernando Torres helped inspire Liverpool to a hard-fought 2-0 victory against a gritty Fulham side at Anfield. Rafa Benitez’s men were staring down the barrel of yet another home draw as the Cottagers looked to have brought them back to earth from their midweek heroics. But the Spanish hitman came off the bench to break the deadlock with ten minutes on the clock and skipper Steven Gerrard sealed a 2-0 win with a penalty at the death. Benitez sprang a surprise by naming an unchanged side from that which demolished Besiktas 8-0 in midweek. Even Peter Crouch, expected to make way for Torres despite netting two against the Turks, kept his place.

Go, Fulham!
Fulham finally managed to hold onto a lead after Clint Dempsey and David Healy’s second-half strikes proved enough to beat Reading 3-1 at Craven Cottage. If the table was based on half-time scores then Lawrie Sanchez’s side would be near the top, but after Simon Davies gave them the lead with a superb volley, the hosts sat back and allowed Kevin Doyle to secure what looked like a deserved point for the visitors.

The Gunners trailed from the first minute and looked set to suffer a shock defeat until Robin van Persie’s penalty and a last-gasp Alex Hleb strike completed a stirring comeback. The late goals ensured Arsene Wenger’s side repeated the trick they managed to perform at the Emirates Stadium so many times last term – conceding the first goal and coming back to win.
